Slit Lamp

Used for the majority of patients for examining the front and back of the eye. We can use various filters, including Cobalt Blue light e.g. during contact lens assessments and the ‘red-free’ filter for examining specific eye disease at the front or back of the eye e.g. diabetic retinopathy. We also use the slit lamp when performing indirect ophthalmoscopy using specialised lenses (below) to gain a true 3D view of the back of the eye.

A variety of ‘Volk’ condensing lenses used

These are high powered plus lenses we use at the slit lamp or with the headset ophthalmoscope (below) to view an inverted image of the back of the eye. They allow a 3D view which is important when determining the height of certain anatomical features.

Headset Binocluar Indirect Ophthalmsocopy (BIO)

Invaluable technique when examining the back of the eye in children and patients unable to transfer to the slit lamp chair. We are able to gain a full 3D view of the retina and optic nerve.

Retinoscopy

An objective skill to determine the refractive error of your eyes. This is the power of spectacles needed to correct your vision. Again, this is very useful in paediatric patients but also for any patient where subjective questions may be difficult to answer.
